CALI Excellence for the Future Award, Intellectual Property
Graduate Law School, cum laude
AJ has a strong commitment to service. During law school, he worked on veteran benefits appeals and assisted with housing issues affecting low-income families. He has served as a student volunteer on the American Bar Association’s Open Source Software Committee and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the National Society of Black Engineers.
Outside the office, AJ enjoys reading, traveling, and playing the saxophone—admittedly, not always well, but always with enthusiasm.
Alkema “AJ” Woods is an associate at Gray Ice Higdon, PLC, focusing on patent preparation and prosecution. AJ works with in-house legal teams and pioneering technology innovators to secure patent rights, guiding clients through the complex process of obtaining favorable application examinations before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Known for being calm, direct, and client-focused, AJ provides clear and concise recommendations that make the patent process accessible and manageable. Clients describe his approach as trustworthy and reliable, instilling confidence at every step. With a background as a software engineer, AJ brings practical insight into how technical teams approach solutions—an advantage he now applies to intellectual property matters.
AJ’s practice centers on patent preparation and prosecution, with a particular interest in emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine learning applications. He partners with clients to protect innovations by anticipating challenges and delivering practical, results-oriented strategies.
